Q. What is the Nigerian Stock Exchange?

A. It is a Market where securities (shares and Stocks) are bought and sold. Every country has her Stock Exchange and in some countries multiple Stock Exchanges e.g. New York Stock Exchange and American Stock Exchange in the United States.

Q. Who regulates the Nigerian Stock Exchange?

A. The Nigerian stock exchange is a self regulatory body and also regulated by Securities and Exchange Commission.

Q. Who is a Stockbroker?

A. A stockbroker is a regulated professional individual, usually associated with a brokerage firm or broker-dealer, who buys and sells stocks and other securities for both retail and institutional clients, through a stock exchange or over the counter, in return for a fee or commission

Q. How do I open an account?

A. On our website, you will see a section under the title Resources, hover over that tab and click downloads. You will be redirected to a page where there are various forms to download. If you are an individual, opening an individual account then click and download the individual account opening form, similarly if corporate accounts then download and fill in the corporate account opening form. Once you have filled in the form. You can either bring it to the office, or scan the filled document and send it to our email address. Note you will still have to come in with your proof of ID as stated on the form.

Q. What are shares?

A. In financial markets, a share is a unit of ownership in a company. When you buy shares, you become a part owner of the business and are thus entitled to benefits in term of dividend and bonus shares if the company does well.

Q. What are dividends?

A. A dividend is a payment made by a corporation to its shareholders, usually as a distribution of profits or instead of paying cash dividend the company may opt to issue additional shares in term of bonus to existing shareholders to the value of the dividends they would have received.

Q. Are there any charges?

A. Yes there is a statutory fee of 1.35% that we charge.

Q. Can I view my account?

A. Yes you can view your account once you have registered with us, we will send you a user name and password that will enable you to see what stocks or shares you have, the volume you have and also price.

Q. Can anyone invest?

A. Yes anyone can invest, contact us and we will be more than happy to help, assist and guide you.

Q. What is meant by the term 'securities'?

A. A security is a tradable asset of any kind

Q. What is meant by the term 'Investor'?

A. An investor is a person who allocates capital with the expectation of a financial return

Q. Does the investment have to be long term or short-term?

A. Either, it can be short term or long term. Long term is more advisable, but it is up to you the investor to have the final decision, we will advise you adequately and efficiently, but you have the final say.

Q. What is the mode of payment for the purchase of shares?

A. You can pay directly to our clients’ account No. 1014641232 at UBA Plc nationwide and inform us. You can also issue your cheque in favour of DSU Brokerage Services Limited, we however discourage payment of cash through any of our staff.

Q. How long will it take for my buy or sell order to be executed.

A. Your orders are executed as soon as we receive it and you will receive an automated, system generated and system sent email of your contract notes by 4:00 pm of any day a trade is executed on your behalf.

Q. How do I place a buy or sale order?

A. You can place your buy or sell order online, through your online account access and you can also make orders through a dedicated and approved email.

Q. I am not in Nigeria; can I open an account with DSU?

A. Yes, you can have an account with DSU and be very active from any part of the world. DSU is already serving some clients in the UK, USA and other parts of the World. Even clients in the oil and gas sector who spend their time in deep sea manage their stock account as far as they have access to the internet.

Q. Can I decide what stocks to buy?

A. Yes you can choose or you can fill a mandate form giving us directives to buy on your behalf. So we will look at the market and purchase what we think is a viable option.

Q. Can I buy directly from the stock exchange?

A. No this must be done through a registered stockbrokerage firm.

Q. Who do I approach if I have problems with my shares or Dividends?

A. Contact us by e-mail, phone, or you may even come into the office where our dedicated customer friendly staff will be more than happy to help and assist you efficiently.

Q. Do I get a certificate for the shares purchased in my name?

A. In the spirit of global dematerialization of physical certificate worldwide, your certificate are held in soft copy at the Central Securities Clearing System Limited ( a subsidiary of the Nigerian Stock Exchange) A CSCS statement representing your holdings can be obtained through your stockbroker or directly from CSCS. It is advisable you present any physical certificate in your position for verification into CSCS.

Q. What are the benefits of buying shares?

A. It’s an investment, as the company grows and gets profit, you can enjoy capital appreciation, cash dividend and bonus shares.

Q. Can I transfer my shares?

A. Yes you can, go to our resources section, click downloads and there is a form for transferring shares. Simply download and fill it in, then send it to any of our offices, we will be more than happy to help. You may also come to any of our offices and we will guide and help you through the whole process.

Q. How do I monitor the Stock Market and know the Gainers and Losers?

A. You can monitor through a variety of ways which include the NSE website, Television, News papers, SEC. Our website has links to NSE, CSCS and Proshare. We have specialised direct links which make it easier for you to track full share prices, top gainers and also top losers.

Q. What if I want to open an account with DSU and still maintain my current stockbroker?

A. You may keep your other stock-broking account; there is no problem with that. We will not have any involvement or interference with your other stock broker. The account you open with us is the account/portfolio we will maintain and advise you on.

Q. Who will manage my account?
